Panaferd-AX comes from the microorganism Paracoccus carotinifaciens. While it is less than 0.2 microns in size, this microorganism is one of many components in the start of the food chain in the aquatic environment and produces one of the highest concentration of carotenoids, including astaxanthin.
Under specific conditions developed by our team of scientists, a natural fermentation of the Paracoccus microorganism is conducted to produce Panaferd-AX. This process guarantees no GMOs, no additives, and no preservatives.
Easily recognized by their colors varying from orange, to yellow and red, carotenoid pigments are naturally found in plants, algae, and microorganisms such as Paracoccus. However, animals such as fish or shrimp do not synthesize carotenoids and as a consequence they must find these pigments in their food chain.
Carotenoids are key nutriments in various biological functions including vision, skin protection or reproduction. They also act as strong antioxidants and excellent free-radical quenchers like vitamins E and C.
Panaferd-AX contains various carotenoids (up to 50 g/kg) such as astaxanthin (20 g/kg min). When part of the salmon feed diet, astaxanthin gives the natural deep pink red color to the fish while protecting the flesh against oxidation damages. Since it comes from a natural aquatic source at the start of the food chain, astaxanthin has the same chemical form (isomer) as the one found in wild salmon.
The use of Panaferd-AX is fully authorized in all major salmon producing countries and has been approved by the EFSA (European Food and Safety Agency) and the FDA ( U.S. Food and Drug Administration ).
Panaferd-AX is also fully compliant with the European Union organic aquaculture norms as well as other organic standards from labels in Germany and Switzerland.
