Panaferd®-AX comes from the microorganism Paracoccus carotinifaciens. This microorganism is one of many components in the start of the food chain in the aquatic environment and produces one of the highest concentration of carotenoids, including astaxanthin.
Easily recognized by their colors varying from orange, to yellow and red, carotenoids are naturally found in plants, algae, and microorganisms such as Paracoccus. However, animals such as fish or shrimp do not synthesize carotenoids so they must find these nutrients in their food.
Carotenoids are key nutrients in various biological functions including vision, skin protection and reproduction. They also act as strong antioxidants and excellent free-radical quenchers like vitamins E and C.
The use of Panaferd-AX is fully authorized in all major salmon producing countries and has been approved by the EFSA (European Food and Safety Agency) and the FDA ( U.S. Food and Drug Administration ).
Panaferd-AX is also fully compliant with the European Union organic aquaculture norms as well as other organic standards from labels in Germany and Switzerland.
