Almost every seafood lover has been shopping for salmon at the grocery store and noticed the “color added” label on the packaging. But what does this label mean? The “color added” label is required by the FDA for salmon with any color additives, regardless of whether the additives are natural or synthetic.

Natural or Synthetic Astaxanthin?

Some retailers clearly show that they use natural astaxanthin for their salmon. However, if the label only says “color added,” then this makes it difficult for the consumer to know whether the color is natural or synthetic. Check out our blog, “How to Choose Salmon and Trout with Natural Color”  to help alleviate this problem.
